The diagnosis of a learning disability or AD/HD in a son or daughter can
cause feelings of loss, guilt, anger and great concern in a parent. The learning challenges or gaps in skills and the resulting
struggles to succeed in school, often take a great toll on a child's
self-esteem. This toll can affect motivation, productivity, social
interactions, employment and family life. Dr. Cruise specializes in working with children with learning differences, AD/HD, and developmental disabilities and will discuss how your child can be helped.

A Comprehensive Approach Involving Teachers, Parents, Students and Their
Peers
In conjunction with the MSDE Advisory Council on ADHD, Dr. French is
currently piloting a Multisystemic Training for Students with Deficits in
Executive Functioning in the Frederick County Public School System. This
multimodal training targets executive functioning skills - planning and
initiation, organization, attention, self-monitoring, self-regulation,
inhibition, and working memory, for intervention in order to facilitate the
academic and personal success of all students with executive functioning
deficits.

Written Language Concerns for Students with
Learning Disabilities
Ms. Nancy Farley, MA, OTR/L will provide an overview of Assistive Technology
(AT) within the Howard County Public School System. She will discuss
Universal Accommodations, what they are and how they are accessed, as well
as Common Written Communication concerns for students with learning
disabilities. Ms. Farley will also demonstrate some of the frequently used
Assistive Technologies, future direction for use of AT within the general
education classroom, as well as AT and the Law.

- TOPIC: The Latest on the Use of Medications to Treat Social, Emotional, Behavioral and Learning Problems in Children
Dr. Linda Grossman is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Head of the Division of Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She also serves on the MSDE ADHD ADvisory Committee and as a consultant to the Baltimore County School system, helping them to design better interventions for children with learning and behavior problems. She sees patients with school and behavior problems, privately in several locations.
