Meet and Greet
September is always a difficult month to meet with back to school nights. We look forward to seeing those of you who don't have a conflict. As usual, we will have resources available and will spend some time on questions/concerns. We will use the time to provide details about the upcoming November "What Works and Why" conference and set up our speaker calendar for the year. Bring your ideas.
September is also ADHD awareness month, so we will let everyone know more about the exiting events coming up this month; e.g., September 22nd HCPSS event with Dr. Gioia. Also, September 19th event on Capitol about "Universal Design and Special Education" --See our Yahoo group for details. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Using both informal and formal data to analyze your child’s strengths and needs, the presenters will discuss how you can work with the school to enhance your child's educational program. Participants will learn to identify the various forms of data, how to keep it organized, make sense of it, and present it to the school.

TOPIC: Successful Transitions from High School to College for Different Learners
Gone are the days when having a learning disability would automatically exclude a student from attending college. Today, many teenagers have the opportunity to enjoy life on campus and all the benefits a college education can provide. With a little help and the proper preparation, high school students who have learning and/or behavioral disabilities can lead a fulfilling life away from the comfort and daily support of Mom and Dad. This presentation will address the emotional separation and the serious concerns parents have for their child’s ability to manage a learning disability independently.

A "how to" workshop on the many uses of idea maps to plan projects, study for tests and analyze information. The idea map helps students see the relationship between the big picture and the supporting details. As a self- generated guide, it reflects the student's current knowledge while leaving room for additional ideas and facts

BrainDance, is a creative movement program designed by Ann Green Gilbert of Creative Dance in Washington. Brain Dance is modeled afer the 8 significant movement patterns a baby innately performs during the first 12 months of life from breathing to crawling. These movements, chock full of sensory experiences, rewire and wake up the nervous system, leaving us feeling energized and more alert. The different version work wonders with kids of all ages, from 1 to 101. Dr. Linda Grossman, Bureau Director at Baltimore County Department of Health
TOPIC: Treating ADHD: What's new and what's important to know
Dr. Grossman will discuss the current thinking about the role of medication in treating ADHD symptoms and the concerns that parents sometimes have about using medications to treat ADHD. She will cover the pros and cons of the newer medication options and discuss what other kinds of interventions might be appropriate for a youngster with ADHD. She also will offer suggestions for working with schools to best help youngsters with ADHD and help other professionals and parents understand and implement skills that assist students in overcoming executive function roadblocks. The best part of her job is helping her students become independent learners.

Topics to be covered: What specific tests actually test; Global Abilities Index versus Full Scale IQ score; What does processing mean and how it be measured; How to test for attentional and executive function weaknesses; and emotional and personality testing.

panel of personnel from the Central Office of HCPSS will provide a review of changes
taking place across the school district in how professional development
is being delivered for all teachers about different learners. Experts
from Technology, Special Education, Psychological Services/problem
solving teams and Professional and Organizational Development offices will provide an
overview of some new approaches to raising awareness and providing
strategies to help all learners achieve.
